Will Kia Ora Koutou justify favouritism and win the 2016 WATC Derby, or will one of his talented rivals post an upset?
Kia Ora Koutou ($2.10)
Kia Ora Koutou is arguably the class horse of the 2016 WATC Derby field, will leave from the rails draw and will be very hard to beat in the Ascot feature under the conditions and distance. Posting four wins and three minors through his eight career starts so far, the Blackfriars gelding capped an impressive debut campaign third in the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) at Flemington on October 31st. Resuming this time for fifth in the Listed Lex Piper Stakes (1600m), Kia Ora Koutou has continued to relish a step up in distance having since placed third in the Listed JC Roberts Stakes (1800m) and second in the Listed Melvista Stakes (2200m).
Arcadia Dream ($6.50)
Arcadia Dream has returned to racing in slick form this time and arguably offers punters the best value for money in 2016 WATC Derby betting markets at a quote of $6.50 for success or $1.95 to finish in the first three. Ending an impressive summer campaign with success in the Listed Aquanita Stakes (1800m) on December 5th, the Domesday filly returned this time for fourth in the Listed Challenge Stakes (1500m) before running second in the Listed Ascot 1000 Guineas (1800m) on March 5th. Having since won the Listed Natasha Stakes (2200m) and finished second in the Group 3 WA Oaks (2400m), Arcadia Dream will enjoy a second run over a mile and a half and has been charged with carrying only 54.5kgs.
Heart Starter ($7.50)
Heart Starter has been one of the most consistent three-year-olds of the Perth autumn and is on track to lay a typically great account for himself in the 2016 WATC Derby. Returning this time for consecutive second place finishes in a pair of minor races over 1400m, the son of Domesday posted a maiden race win in the Jcw Electrical Maiden (1705m) before making a successful transition to black type racing when winning the Lex Piper Stakes. Repeating the dose in the JC Roberts Stakes, Heart Starter placed fourth in the Melvista Stakes last time out.
