Jockey William Pike has elected to take the ride on classy filly Arcadia Dream in Saturday’s 2016 WATC Derby (2400m) at Ascot Racecourse after also being offered the opportunity to partner Heart Starter.
Arcadia Dream was a strong and consistent performer for leading Perth trainer Grant Williams through the recent Perth Summer Carnival and returned in similarly good condition when fourth in the Listed Challenge Stakes (1500m) first-up on February 20th.
Progressing to second in the Listed Ascot 1000 Guineas (1800m) on March 5th, the Domesday filly savaged the line for success in the Listed Natasha Stakes (2200m) on Match 19th; beating closest rival Blackwood by close to three lengths.
Jumping from the gates well in the Group 3 WA Oaks (2400m) last time out on April 2nd, Arcadia Dream received a good run in transit but failed to completely make up the required ground late; running second to First Impressions.
Pike conceded the decision on who to ride in the 2016 Western Australian Derby was tough, but is pleased to remain in the saddle of the classy Bob and Sandra Peters-owned filly.
“I thought I’d have a tough choice between Arcadia Dream and Heart Starter,” Pike told The West Australian.
“But then Arcadia Dream was beaten by the stable mate and Heart Starter was also beaten.
“That made it even tougher.”
Arcadia Dream immediately stamped herself as a filly to follow from the time she debuted for a three length win in the Stable Affairs Maiden (1200m) in July last year and has since posted a commendable four wins and five minors through a total of eleven starts.
Running second in the Listed Belgravia Stakes (1200m) in October, Arcadia Dream continued to impress when finishing in the minors in each of the Listed Burgess Queen Stakes (1400m) and Group 3 WA Championship Stakes (1600m); ending her campaign with success in the Listed Aquanita Stakes (1800m) on December 5th.
