Kia Ora Koutou stamped himself as one to follow in the late stages of 2015 and has been confirmed in the 2016 WATC Derby field.

Posting a commendable four race wins and three minors through only eight competitive starts so far, Kia Ora Koutou won the Westspeed 3.y.o Plate (1650m) with ease on September 19th before repeating the dose against a talented open-aged field in the Crown Perth BM72+ (2200m) on October 3rd; booking a trip east.

Justifying the decision when third behind Tarzino and Etymology in the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m), the Blackfriars gelding retuned this time for fifth in the Listed Lex Piper Stakes (1600m) on March 5th.

Having clearly enjoyed the continued step-up in distance when third in the Listed JC Roberts Stakes (1800m) and second in the Listed Melvista Stakes (2200m) most recently, Kia Ora Koutou will leave from the ideal barrier 1 with regular hoop Joe Azzopardi aboard.

Who Dat Singa savaged the line for success in the Melvista Stakes last time but may require luck in running after drawing the wide and somewhat awkward barrier 11.

Who Dat Singa has fast stamped himself as a stable start for Alan Mathews this season and appears as though he will relish a step-up to a mile and a half in the WATC Derby.

Who Dat Singa will again be partnered by Patrick Carberry this weekend and has been the field’s most consistent runner this time having finished second in each of the Lex Piper Stakes and JC Roberts Stakes leading into his Melvista Stakes triumph.

Cappo D’Oro completed the trifecta in the Melvista Stakes and carries strong and consistent form into the 2016 WATC Derby.

Winning the Chaff City Discount Maiden (2300m) on February 28th, the Medaglia D’oro gelding ran a credible fourth in the MPA Silks Handicap (2200m) leading into the Melvista Stakes.

Leading hoop Steven Parnham will take the ride on Cappo D’Oro in the WATC Derby, who could very well receive the run of the race from barrier 6.
