Chartreux Beats Bridgestone & Brother Mak in WATC Derby

April 28th, 2010

Victorian trainer David Hayes and jockey Brad Rawiller combined once again for another successful assault on the Perth races, with talented three-year-old stayer Chartreux taking out the $500,000 Group 1 WATC Derby (2400m) at Ascot on Saturday.

Chartreux ($5.50) sat four back on the rails early on and then made his move up the field to secure the win three-quarters of a length from the Neville Parnham-trained Bridgestone.

Melvista Stakes winner Brother Mak started as the $3.50 favourite and trailed the top two Derby runners, making a late challenge inside the final 200m, but was unable to chase them down finishing a further one and a quarter lengths away in third.

Premier local trainer Parnham’s other runner, God Has Spoken, placed an unlucky fourth while WA Oaks winner Impressive Jeuney led early but then trailed off to finish seventh.

Following the big win at the Ascot Races, Hayes is now looking towards the prestigious Caulfield and Melbourne Cups in the spring for Chartreux, a son of Catbird.
