On Saturday the esteemed Ascot racecourse is set to host Perth’s next feature race, the $500,000 Group 1 Western Australian Turf Club (WATC) Derby (2400m).
The 2010 Schweppes WATC Derby has attracted a field of 15 exciting three-year-olds ready to fight it out for the lucrative $300,000 first prize and attain Group 1 autumn racing glory.
Brother Mak is the current pre-race favourite paying $3.70 for a win with Ladbrokes.com.au. Drawn in barrier seven, the Wally Mitchell-trained Zabeel gelding is coming off a last start victory in the Melvista Stakes (2200m) and has shown great improvement as a stayer over his seven career starts.
Two horses following closely in the betting markets are Bridgestone at $4.60 and Impressive Jeuney at $4.80.
The Neville Parnham-trained Bridgestone has drawn well with barrier four for Saturday, but the Pentire colt is yet to prove himself over the 2400m distance as his greatest win to date is over 1800m.
Meanwhile, talented Jeune filly Impressive Jeuney is coming off two wins including her eye-catching last start victory in the Group 3 Western Australian Oaks (2400m) last Saturday.
Drawn out wide in barrier 10, Impressive Jeuney has the speed, stamina and experience to do well here with Shaun O’Donnell in the mount.
Other top chances in the 2010 WATC Derby include David Haye’s improving Catbird gelding Chartreux, and another three-year-old from the stables of Neville Parnham, God Has Spoken, both drawn ideally in barriers one and three respectively.
Blackfriars colt God Has Spoken was a Group 1 runner-up last year when he ran second to Sniper’s Bullet in the Kingston Town Classic, but has yet to return to the same form this campaign running fifth in the Melvista Stakes last start.
The other major racing action happening across the country on Saturday will be Sydney Cup Day at Randwick, featuring four top Group 1 races including the $400,000 Sydney Cup (3200m) and the $350,000 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m).
The 2010 Schweppes WATC Derby is set to run towards the end of the meeting as race seven.
