Known as the WATC Derby, the 2015 Western Australian Derby is hosted by the West Australian Turf Club at Ascot Racecourse, Perth in late April each year.

The Group 1 WATC Derby is a set weights challenge raced over the classic derby distance of 2400 metres.

Held during the Perth autumn carnival, the Western Australian Derby is the feature race at the meeting and the only event with Group status on the day, which ensures that it always draws many spectators and produces some competitive and thrilling betting markets.

The 2015 Western Australian Derby is on the 11th April at the Ascot Racecourse.

Lead Up Races

The Group 3 WA Oaks (2400m) held the week before at the same course is the ideal preparatory race for three-year-old fillies on their way to WATC Derby glory.

Earlier in the autumn at Ascot the Group 2 WA Guineas (1600m) can serve as a good starter race for three-year-olds looking to step up in distance later in the carnival.

History

First raced in 1888 when Harridan claimed victory, the Western Australian Derby was a 12 Furlong principal race until 1972 when its length was officially changed to 2400 metres and its status to Group 1 in 1979.

It was not held in 1987 and in 1992, there were two WATC Derbies held, a Group 1 and a Group 2 race.
